Speech Therapy is not Just “Speech”

Choose Affinity Skilled Living and Rehabilitation Center for Nursing Care

The Speech Therapy service at Affinity Skilled Living and Rehabilitation Center is an important function provided at the facility due to the on-site Respiratory, Ventilator and Tracheostomy Unit and does more than just help residents with their ability to speak. Working with their facility’s Respiratory Therapists, the Speech Therapists at Affinity work to restore quality of life, independence and activities of daily living to residents at the facility. Their goal is to assist the facility’s residents regain their abilities, as close as possible, to their level of function prior to their illness and admission at Affinity.

Paul F., a resident at Affinity, was gracious to share his experience about the Speech Therapy services he has received. Suffering a stroke in December, he arrived at the facility unable to speak. He shared that “The Speech Therapists go above and beyond,” and can now communicate with his family.

Services provided include:

Swallow Function: There are many residents that cannot have food or drink by mouth (NPO) because of a risk of choking due to an injury or illness, or those who have health issues that may affect swallowing function, for example, residents with dementia who may have lost their ability to swallow, or those on ventilators or with feeding tubes. Some residents may be candidates to regain swallow function. After swallowing evaluations, Speech Therapists at Affinity work with residents to strengthen oral motor strength and range of motion to assist those with the potential to regain this skill. Affinity offers provides bedside swallow evaluations and blue dye testing for resident convenience.

Cognition: At Affinity, the team’s main goal is restoring functional communication skills. Many illnesses or injuries may affect auditory and reading comprehension, including those who have had a CVA (stroke), TBI (traumatic brain injury) or neurological injuries or illnesses including MS, ALS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and Dementia. These residents may be candidates for Speech Therapy services and have the potential to regain short-term and long-term memory and problem solving skills.

Speaking Valves: The Speech Therapists work with the Pulmonologists and Respiratory Therapists at the facility to evaluate residents with tracheostomies for their ability to use a speaking valve to give them back their voice. Respiratory Therapists at Affinity are on-site 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.

Speech Therapy services at Affinity are offered 6 days a week.
